Wykład otwarty dr. Davida Orrego-Carmona „Przekład i media w epoce cyfrowej”

Instytut Lingwistyki Stosowanej zaprasza na wykład otwarty dr. Davida Orrego-Carmona z Aston University (Birmingham) pt. „Przekład i media w epoce cyfrowej”.

Dobrej 55 w godz. 13.15-14.45.

Serdecznie zapraszamy!

Translation and media in the digital age

This lecture will review the role of translation on the internet and its role in the international distribution of audiovisual content. Subtitling networks create connections that make possible the materialisation of the global media flows, both through mainstream and alternative channels. In particular, this is an enabling power of non-professional subtitling which highlights the function of translation as a social activity in the 21st century and the potential it has to bring people together in a world dominated by democratised technologies.

Outside the boundaries of the professionalisation of translation, which is a largely Western concept, translation has a primarily communicative role in societal contexts. This lecture emphasises that translation, in all its forms, is a key element in the exploration of users and the network they create; it approaches subtitling as an integral practice in the participatory culture and the global media flows. Within this framework, the lecture focuses on the users of subtitles as key agents in the circulation of media content. Conceptualising  translation as a human activity, not only a profession, the lecture will revisit core concepts of translation, such as visibility and the roles of translators. This analysis will make it possible to make suggestions about the future role of translation in an increasingly digital and globalised society.

The talk will take place on 31 May 2022 at 1:15 pm in room 1.008 in Dobra 55.
